Brotherhood
Brotherhood is an opportunity in which the men of Shady Brook Baptist Church can be in fellowship with each other and show the love of Christ. One Saturday morning each month, the Brotherhood gather at 8:00 a.m. for a time of food and fellowship. In addition, we look for ways that we can reach out in our community and beyond with the love of Jesus Christ. The Brotherhood of Shady Brook has been diligent to keep up with the tremendous maintenance needs of our buildings and grounds. They worked several weekends to erect a fence that extends across the entire back border of our property. Brotherhood will be working to renovate our Family Life Facilities to accommodate our recent growth. They have also worked in homes of our membership whenever there was a crisis or a need. Finally, the Brotherhood has sponsored several mission projects in our communities like the yearly coat drive for the homeless shelter in Gastonia.

Children’s Ministries
Children’s activities include annual events such as “The Easter Egg Hunt”, Vacation Bible School, Fall Festival and Christmas Party. The children enjoy searching the grounds for hundreds of eggs at The Easter Egg Hunt. There are a variety of activities such as dying eggs, a Bunny Hop, pin the cottontail on the Easter Bunny, etc to ensure the kids have fun. The Easter Bunny usually makes an appearance to put candy in the children’s Easter baskets. Most importantly, the kids learn about and celebrate the real meaning of Easter.

Our summer Vacation Bible School draws children from the Church, Day Care and community. Each year has theme related lessons and activities to teach Christian concepts. Kids really enjoy the recreation, crafts, and music. Several snacks and meals are served during VBS to make it convenient for families. The kids look forward to discovering who our surprise mascot is each year. Our 2005 VBS theme was “Construction Zone”. The children loved exploring the bulldozers, cranes, and other equipment as well as helping to build God’s kingdom.

Each fall, the children either go to a “Pumpkin Patch” or have a “Fall Festival”. At the “Pumpkin Patch”, we take a hayride, pick our own pumpkins, go through a cornstalk maze, and have a bonfire to roast hot dogs and marshmallows. The Fall “Festival” involves a lot of activity booths such as a duck pond, face painting, pumpkin decorating, jungle toss, cupcake walk, etc. The children learn and have fun at church.

Our annual “Christmas Party” is always highlighted by a visit from ‘ol Saint Nick himself to give the kids a little treat. The party is a time for the church to gather as one big family and celebrate the “Birth of Jesus”. We usually ear a meal, sing a few carols, and wish everyone a blessed Christmas.

In addition to these traditions, the children’s leaders coordinate a variety of other activities throughout the year as opportunities arise such as the Zoo, a Farm, Skating, Shows, Swimming, etc. These are fun for the whole family!

Children’s Choirs
Music has always played an important part in the life of the Christian church. Likewise, we at SBC also see everyday how music shapes the culture al around us and see how music motivates, educates, and stimulates the minds of young people everywhere. With that in mind we believe that reaching those young minds with the things of God as really as possible is priority one.

Under the auspices of the Discipleship Committee we have three (3) choirs following the graded system of arrangement:

Genesis- Genesis or “The Beginning” is for children ages 4 and 5 years of age           through. Within this group you will find children in kindergarten class.
Kids of the Kingdom- “KK” enrolls students in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades.
Joy- The Joy choir is the last choir before our young people move on the Youth           Ministry and serves those children in the 4th thru 6th grade and plus.

The children’s music ministry at SBC is child centered and strives to engage the whole (Mind, body, and spirit) person in music with concentration on developing children of moral character, well established value systems, and kids who love God and the church with all their heart. These young people play an important part in the worship services through their singing performances while, at the same time learning how the church operates through the various components of worship.

Childhood is a very important part of the growing process and the children’s ministries at SBC strive to make it as spiritually fulfilling and fun as possible. God is worthy of our praise at any age and our young people are learning that on a weekly basis through their attendance in one of the musical entities.

Youth Ministry
Shady Brook Baptist has employed a part-time Youth Minister for the past several years to provide specific ministry for our Junior High and High School age youth. They meet together each week on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. in our Family Life Center for Discipleship. In addition, there are many opportunities during the year in which we schedule Youth events. During the course of a typical year, our Youth may go White Water Rafting, Camping, and Snow Skiing just to name a few activities. Finally, we have always looked for ways in which the youth can show the love of Christ in our world. Shady Brook Youth participated in a Dare to Share Conference during the fall of 2005 that had them in our community taking up collections for the local Food Bank and witnessing for Christ. In July of 2006, the Youth will travel to Gulf Port, Mississippi to help the victims who are still suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Come by and visit the Youth of Shady Brook Baptist Church.

Senior Adult Ministry
Shady Brook provides a special ministry for the young at heart and those eager to explore new horizons later in life. The “Keenagers” meet the third Wednesday of every month at 11:00 a.m. for a luncheon, a time of fun, and plenty of fellowship. In addition, we have bible study on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. This provides some alternative to the Wednesday night study for all those who may not like to be out in the later hours of the day. Though the group is predominantly senior adult, anyone who is available at that time is welcome to attend. The Keenagers also plan a number of day trips during the year. They may go out to lunch at one of the area restaurants or they take the church bus and head to the mountains to see the changing leaves in the fall. They plan at least two long trips each year. The seniors travel to the beach or thee mountains to see shows, do some shopping, eat good food, and simply enjoy each others company away from home. Finally, our senior adults have been involved in a number of mission activities and fund raisers for the Church. They had the vision and organized most of the events that were necessary to raise the money that purchased our new church bus.

Outreach Ministry
At Shady Brook Baptist Church, we work diligently to keep in touch with our members who are ill or shut-in and need to feel connected to the church family. We also strive to remember our family of faith during times of sorrow and special need. Because of these needs, we originated this special ministry to contact these members with cards and phone calls during their times of crisis. In addition, we work to maintain contact with the community that continues to grow around us. We will often saturate the communities with flyers and brochures about our upcoming events and services. We have also worked together with area churches the Lay Witness Foundation to share the love of Jesus Christ in door-to-door Evangelism.
